Each individual in this pedigree is given a number. If the number of any individual is represented as n, then his father's number is 2n, and his mother's is 2n+1. This is illustrated below:
1. Alfred Henry Sturtevant | 2. Alfred Henry Sturtevant | 4. Alfred Henry Sturtevant |
5. Harriet Evelyn Morse
3. Phoebe Curtis Reed | 6. Charlton Albanis Reed
7. Emilie Harding Curtis |
Some of the authorities used are cited under a few of the separate entries. Much of the information has come from the published genealogies of the Munson, Warren, Tuttle, Tanner, Newcomb, Richards, Leland, and Morse families. Such local works as Davis' "Plymouth Landmarks", and the similar accounts of Watertown (Bond), Stratford (Orcutt), etc., have also been useful.
In several cases I have used MS pedigrees found in old family records. These in general do not cite authorities nor give the name of the compiler.

For an account of his life see: Julian M. Sturtevant - an Autobiography, 1896, Fleming H. Revell Co., New York, Chicago, and Toronto. 349 pp. This book is also my authority for part of his ancestry. It has, however one error: he had one extra generation in the Bradford line (the second American William, (#524), was the father - not the grandfather - of Major John, (#262)). It also seems likely that his great grandmother, (#69), was named Hannah Newcomb, not Esther. 9. Hannah Richards Fayerweather. The youngest of seven children, probably all born at New Canaan, Conn. I (#2) have his Family Bible, which contains this entry: "Richard Fayerweather, son of Thomas and Mary Fayerweather, born Dec. 21st 1778 was married 1803 to Hannah Richards who was born Aug. 30th, 1775. My father once told me that his sister Lucy had been told in New Canaan that her grandfather (this Richard Fayerweather) was an illegitimate child. I have found no record of his parents other than the above entry, but local records in New Canaan and Norwalk have not been thoroughly searched. The name Fayerweather was present at about this time in Norwalk families. There was a Thomas Fayerweather (or Fairweather) at Boston in 1634, who had sons and grandsons. Perhaps this line? There is a family tradition - unsupported so far as I have found - that the name Fayerweather was originally Beautemps, and that the first emigrant from France went originally to Martinique. 19. The source of this date is unreliable.) 23. Sarah Gaubert. Born Mar. 28, 1789, probably at Richmond. ME., where she died Oct. 25, 1833. 24. Jesse Reed. At one time surrogate, Hunterdon Co., N.J. 25. __ Hart. 26. John Higgins. Born 1791, died 1851. Lived at Flemington, N.J., where he was known as "Old Yaller". 27. Rebecca Schenk. There were Schenks in Hunterdon Co., N.J., who traced to Roeliff (=Ralph) Schenck, who came from Holland in 1650 and settled on Long Island. Surely this same family. 29. Meribah Curtis. B: about 1795. Died July 12, 1868. She (and her son William) lived with her brother Ebeni(^)zer and his wife Betsey. He was of Quaker ancestry, the family having been for several generations at Point Pleasant, N.J. Her son (#14) was illegitimate. Brother: Cook Curtis. 30. Seth Doolittle. Died Oct. 1853, aged 52. Born Dec. 9, 1744, at Norwalk, Conn. where he died Feb. 9, 1816. Married Ruth Hanford Feb. 27, 1766. He was a soldier in the Revolution, with the rank of Captain. 39. Ruth Hanford. 40. Moody Morse. Ebenizer Scales. Born Nov. 6, 1766, at Nottingham, N.H. Died Feb. 18, 1855. Married Anna Matties Beg. 17, 1789. He was ordained in 1804 as a minister in the Free Will Baptist church. Born Aug. 17, 1757, at Wiscasset, ME. 46. Nicholas Gaubert. Born in France - family tradition says at Marseilles. He was on a sailing vessel on the coast of Maine during the Revolution. He want ashore and saw a girl who took his eye. He left his ship and persuaded the girl to marry him. So runs the family tradition. There is a published record of "intention of marriage" at Topsham - "Nicholas Gaubert and and Diana Ried, July 7, 1779" (Drummond, J.H. "The Rogers family of Georgetown" - which is also the authority for the ancestry of (#47).) 47. Diana Reid. Born July 2, 1760, at Topsham, Me. Died Feb. 10, 1818. 48. Asa Reed. Was a captain in the Revolutionary army. He was taken prisoner and held on the prison-ship "Jersey". 52. Jediah Higgins. Born 1751. Died 1820. Married (1) Mary Hill (2) Rachel McPherson. 53. Died Aug. 6, 1806. Married William Turner Mar. 23, 1749, in Kent, Conn. So the record in the published Newcomb genealogy. Grandfather (#8) gives her first name as Esther; and the above record has her husband's surname wrong. The probability is that, in spite of these discrepancies, this is the woman we are descended from. The pedigree given on later pages is on this assumption. 70. Timothy Munson. Born July 1, 1734. Died Oct. 29, 1826. Lived at New Haven and Milford, Conn., and Pownal, Vt. He served in the Revolution in 1775 and in 1778. He was a tailor, a tavern-keeper, and a farmer. 71. Sarah Bishop.
